The Milford road gives access some touring terrain and the NZAC Homer Hut is a good base for a couple trips:
– Homer Saddle: a short tour to fill an half day. Start at the Homer Tunnel Entrance, quite often start straight on skis.
– Gertrude Valley: up the valley to Traverse Saddle/mt Talbot is an excellent day tour.
For both tours light crampons and an axe are recommended.
The terrain is steep and avo danger needs to be carefully assessed before venturing out; the debris on the Milford road driving in are a good reminder.
