Tricky to get this one on with conditions but if you do it will make for a memorable journey skiing the Gnarr. Was skied in firm wind pressed snow, the ice cap had a narrow ribbon of soft snow through the typical 3000m NZ sastruggi making it skiable off the summit.
|After that it was firm but chalky the rest of the way. Not a classic fall line ski but a good ski mountaineering ski, and beats walking down it….Randomly it was noted in the hut book that another party had also skied it only a few days earlier. Make sure the stability is very good as the ramp in places is steep and very exposed. The easiest access is to fly into Bevan Col using Aspiring Helicopters and stay at Colin Todd hut, about an hour from Bevan Col, price subject to numbers and type of machine needed. Alternatively earn your turns and walk in from the Matukituki road end at Raspberry Creek. About 5-6 hours to French ridge hut and another hour or so up the quarter Deck to the Bonar glacier.
